Left Behind
My miserable friend,
companionably muted.
They constructed our cage
from reflections of their own
despair and disappointment.
I dreamed your dreams.
We shared their darkness.
Together we huddled.
We never told
until the door opened.
I flew fast on stolen wings.
The window closed
with you left behind.
I escaped our cage,
the one they built,
only to craft one of my own.
I made my bars with hate and self loathing.
I can't break them.
I hope you are far away,
flying free,
leaving me behind.
